Ripple Hum Reverberate Release (2023)
Exhibited at Maelstrom Collaborative Arts, Cleveland, Ohio
February 9-19th, 2023
Ripple Hum Reverberate Release combines looping video projections and layered audio to create an immersive audio visual experience. From Jan 1, 2023 to Feb 9, 2023, I researched, read and recorded news articles from each of the 50 United States about the effects of the US Supreme Court overturning Roe V Wade. During gallery hours, 4 of the audio recorded articles play simultaneously, one out of each speaker in the room, creating a layered audio effect. The cacophony is intended to speak to the confusion and chaos that continues to ensue because the Supreme Court decision.
While the audio loops, video footage of liquid effervescence and maple tree seeds are projected repeatedly throughout the space. Viewers are invited to take in the natural processes of carbon dioxide gas escaping to the surface of a liquid and maples trees slowly ‘helicoptering’ to the earth by the force of gravity. Studies show that maple trees have a practice of aborting their seeds when an external threat is present. Occasionally squares of metal, a seeming foreign object in this world, inserts itself by being dropped in slow motion and disrupting the process. The sound of this disruption echos through the gallery.
